So what is the difference between Backup for One and Microsoft’s System Restore that comes with Windows XP?

There is a difference in what data gets backed up.

The System Restore program that comes with Windows XP is designed to backup the Operation System ONLY. The primary goal of providing you with the ability to just backup the Operating System is to get the computer operational when it will not boot. With XP’s System Restore, you can restore your Registry and Windows System Files only.

Backup for One is designed to backup your entire computer, not just the Operating System. It also allows you to create specific backup sets or groups of files that you want backed up together.

There is a difference in the storage location and methodology.
The System Restore program stores its data (or backup data) on your local hard drive. So, if the hard drive fails or is reformatted, you lose both the original data and the System Restore backup data.

Backup for One is designed to separate your backup data from your original data, providing you with independent storage should your original hard drive experience problems.
